Fil-Am leads Kettle Korn in coming PBL campaign
MAGNOLIA’S LOSS may be Kettle Korn’s gain.
The Joey Concepcion-owned Kettle Korn has acquired the services of Fil-American Josh Urbiztondo, a playmaker who will make his debut in the 2006 PBL Silver Cup set to open on Saturday.
The 6-foot former Fresno Pacific University guard will join a team that needs a tall but dependable shooting guard.
Originally drafted by the Spinners in the recent Rookie Draft, the 23-year-old Urbiztondo is expected to give Kettle Korn stability in the backcourt rotation for UAAP champion coach Pido Jarencion.
“He’s a hardworking player, we like his work ethic. He’s a type of player who can orchestrate the plays and hustles on defense,” said Jarencio of his prized guard.
During his senior year (2005-06), Urbiztondo played in all 29 games of FPU Sunbirds, a member school of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
In the Sunbirds’ website, Urbiztondo finished second in scoring with 11.5 points and 3.5 assists a game.
A native of San Francisco, he’s the second of two sons of Gail and David Urbiztondo, a Filipino who hails from Bulacan.
A business management graduate, Urbiztondo is expected create an impact in the league right away.
Prior to his stint with the Sunbirds, he helped the Hillsdale High School Knights to a pair of league championships in his four seasons.
“I’ve seen some plays in the PBL and it’s quite tough, physical. Although I played in the US where they played with so much intensity, it’s totally different here,” said Urbiztondo. “But that’s fine with me. My concern is to help the team. I guess I can contribute in scoring and defense.”
